CHN Institute For Healthcare Education
CHN Institute provides a fully accredited program that meets all of the course requirements of the Province of Manitoba. If you compare our program to other colleges, you will find that we offer high quality programming and one of the lowest tuition fees in Manitoba. Professional nurses teach our program within a small classroom setting that offers students personalized instruction. We offer both evening and day programs to accommodate students who wish to maintain full-time or part-time employment while pursuing their Health Care Aide Diploma.

OVERVIEW

The Health Care Aide is an integral member of the health care team providing care to individuals requiring supportive assistance. Working under the supervision of a nurse, they provide physical and emotional support to clients while promoting their independence within community, hospital, and personal care home settings.

Health Care Aides work with clients who:
  • Have functional limitations, physical or cognitive disabilities, that interfere with their activities of daily living
  • ReqUire end-of-Iife (palliative) care
  • Have varied medical illnesses and conditions

DUTIES OF A HEALTH CARE AIDE

Duties vary depending on each client's individual needs, but general responsibilities include:
  • Assisting clients with bathing, grooming, dressing, feeding, bedding changes, and hygienic care
  • Performing client bed transfers and turns, lifting clients using lift equipment, and assisting clients with walking and crutch walking
  • Supporting clients with therapeutic activities such as range of motion exercises, medication administration and reminders, and simple wound care
  • Implementing interventions for client behaviour management
  • Ensuring the safety of clients, themselves, and others
  • Communicating with clients and team members in a respectful and positive manner
  • Following directives from nurses
  • Observing and reporting client conditions
Health Care Aides may work in specialized areas such as pediatrics (children), end-of-life, dementia or brain injury programs depending on their interests.
